A classic from the 80’s is now back! Garbage
Pail Kids will once again hit stores starting in August 2003. What started
out as simply a gross out Cabbage Patch Kids parody in 1985, quickly ended
up taking on a life of its own. In the mid to late 80's, your coolness in
school was often dependent on how many complete sets of Garbage Pail Kids
cards you could get your Jello Pudding Pop stained hands on.
I remember it was always a bitch trying to
find these cards in the days long before eBay. I used to have my Mom drive
me around to all the local candy stores in an attempt to find a few packs.
Most stores would unfortunately have “Sold Out” signs in their windows
because of the high demand. Usually, your only hope was trying to trade or
buy some cards from your friends in school. Most of us didn’t have any
money so we had to resort to giving sexual favors in exchange for cards. On
second thought, maybe that was just me. This worked until most schools
banned all Garbage Pail Kids. Ah, the kids in school today with all their
fancy guns and crack don’t know how hard we had it in school.

But all great fads must come to an end. As
the late 80’s approached, Garbage Pail Kids started to die quickly. Kids
ended up moving on to collecting other things such as heroin and sexually
transmitted diseases. After that, most stores were not able to give these
cards away even with the failed free $100 bill in every pack promotion.
Now, they are back! Most of the cards from the new series are leftovers
from the unreleased 16th series but new card are also included. An example
is the “Harry Potty” card which is actually a more handsome Harry Potty, in
my opinion. I can’t wait to buy the new series and take them to work
to trade them. This time, however, there will be no sexual favors… or at
least not many.
